The Cat Lady

Here's what you need to know.

My name is Heather. I am 26 years old. I am a grad student. I am a preschool teacher. I am single. I live in California.

I own the world's greatest cat - Lucy.

I am a quarter life cat lady.

The societal definition of a cat lady makes me out to be some kind of crazy, antisocial, cat hoarding bag lady but I assure you, this is not the case. I am pretty normal and the love that I have for my pet, while quite enthusiastic, is healthy. I make a stand for misunderstood cat ladies everywhere by claiming my pride. I love my cat and she defines a great part of  me. I am a fierce, friendly, independent, socially accepted, strong, smart, and super awesome young woman. Without Lucy all of those things would still be true but my heart would be awfully unhappy if that were the case. She came to me during a time in my life when I was feeling extremely displaced and lost in my life. She healed me and made me whole. She completes me.

Our Story
I adopted Lucy from animal services in September 2011 and we've been best buds ever since. She actually picked me. I was holding another kitten when she started hollering at me from her kennel.  She was making such a fuss but I was busy trying to fall in love with the kitten I thought I wanted. I asked my mom to take that noisy orange teenager cat out of her cage since she so desperately wanted to be held and without two seconds, I kid you not, my mom said, "Oh Heather... you have to hold this cat. You will want this one." And so I did and that was the end of the story. I fell head over heels in love with the snuggly, purry, creamsicle cat who knew exactly what she was doing. I took her home a few days later.

Her full name is actually Lucia Augustiner Blümchen. It is my belief that a pet should never have a mediocre name. And I got pretty clever with hers. Since I lost my heart in Germany, I felt it was only right to give my cat a good, strong German name. Lucia means "light" in many different languages and she definitely brought the light back into my life, even before I brought her home. Augustiner is my favorite German beer, brewed right in Munich, and blümchen is "little flower" in German.

  1. Hi Heather!

I'm hoping you'll get an email about me commenting as I've been following your blog but went away for a bit and now have come to see that you aren't writing here any longer. I was wondering if you are still writing at another blog and if so, if you'd be able to send me the link. You're a great blogger and I love reading your posts.

    Hope all is well!
